If your body feels tight, numb, or disconnected, these simple tools - and how you use them - can help you come home to yourself again.
Raise your hand if your pelvic floor feels more “locked down” than open, or if your go-to vibrator is doing the heavy lifting while your body feels a little numb underneath the surface. 🙋🏽♀️ That was my story for quite a few years, too. Many of us carry patterns of tension, over-stimulation, or disconnection in our pelvis - and the tools we use (and how we use them) make a difference.
As I prepare for two upcoming workshops - Why a Tight 🐱 Ain’t It and Numb to Nourished - I wanted to revisit one of the most common questions I get: “What’s the difference between a pelvic wand and a vibrator? And which one should I be using?”
Let’s explore the what, why, and how these tools can support a more alive, nourished, and connected relationship with your pelvic floor and pleasure.
What They Are
Pelvic wands and vibrators are both tools that can support pelvic health, pleasure, and embodiment - but they serve slightly different purposes.
Pelvic wands are typically smooth, non-vibrating tools made of glass, steel, crystal, or medical-grade silicone. They’re designed for slow, intentional internal or external exploration - to bring awareness to areas of tension, increase circulation, and restore connection.
Vibrators, on the other hand, are electric tools that use rhythmic vibration to stimulate nerve endings, increase blood flow, and support arousal or pain relief. They can be incredibly helpful for desensitized tissues, low arousal, or pelvic pain - but when overused or relied on exclusively, they can also contribute to numbness or overstimulation.
Neither tool is "cheating" on a partner. Both tools have their place within your sexual autonomy and exploration. The key is in how you use them.
Why Use Them
When it comes to the pelvic floor, we’re often told to “tighten, strengthen, and squeeze.” Remember in Cosmo magazines it said to "flex your PC muscle" aka tighten your pelvic floor? But tension is not the same as tone or tensegrity - and a chronically tight or guarded pelvic floor can lead to pain, urgency, painful sex, or difficulty connecting to pleasure (more stories on that in the workshop).
That’s what Why a Tight Pussy Ain’t It is all about: unwinding the myth that “tight equals better,” releasing the fear of "looseness," and learning instead how to release, soften, and reawaken healthy responsiveness.
Here’s how these tools fit in:
For pelvic floor tightness or pain:
A pelvic wand can help you release muscle tension through gentle, internal massage. Combined with breath, awareness, and guidance from a pelvic floor physical therapist, this can help the body relearn what safety and softness feel like. For numbness or overstimulation:
Vibrators can be wonderful for jumpstarting sensation, but if they’re your only route to arousal, you may be bypassing the deeper layers of your body’s natural rhythm. That’s the heart of Numb to Nourished - reclaiming your full spectrum of sensation, from subtle to strong, and cultivating responsiveness through presence rather than intensity. For pleasure and body awareness:
Both tools can increase blood flow, improve tissue health, and deepen your relationship with your body. Used intentionally, they can transform mechanical stimulation into embodied exploration.
How to Use Them with Intention
Before you begin, remember that this is a practice, not a performance. The goal is not orgasm or release - it’s connection, curiosity, and care.
Here’s a gentle framework to guide your exploration:
Set the space.
Create an environment that feels safe and inviting. Dim the lights, play soft music, or take a few deep breaths to drop into your body. Pro tip: Warm your wand (if glass, steel, or crystal) in a warm cup of water or in your hands.Start externally.
Use your tool to gently massage the outer pelvic area - the inner thighs, vulva, and perineum. Notice sensations without judgment.Go slow.
If using a wand internally, move with intention and listen closely to your body’s cues. Explore areas of tightness or tenderness, and soften with your breath rather than forcing entry or movement.Experiment with vibration mindfully.
If you use a vibrator, start at a lower setting off and notice how the sensation feels in your body. Try pausing between pulses or alternating with your hand to stay connected rather than overstimulated. Pro tip: try tapping into the sensation on each part of your pelvic arousal anatomy. Not sure where to find those? Check out the free guide Arousal Anatomy AdventureBreathe and feel.
Let your breath be your guide. On the inhale, invite openness; on the exhale, release tension. Stay curious about what you feel - physically, emotionally, energetically.Aftercare matters.
Clean your tool, hydrate, and take a few minutes to rest. Journaling what you noticed can be deeply illuminating over time.
When to Seek Support
While these tools can be deeply healing, they’re not a replacement for professional care. If you’re experiencing ongoing pelvic pain, difficulty with penetration, urinary leakage, or emotional triggers related to pelvic touch, working with a pelvic floor physical therapist or trauma-informed practitioner can be life-changing and relationship-enriching (with self and partners).
These tools are meant to complement that work - not replace it.
From Tools to Transformation
Used consciously, pelvic wands and vibrators are more than objects of pleasure - they’re instruments of awareness, healing, and embodiment. They help us move from disconnected and mechanical to responsive and nourished.
And that’s what the upcoming workshops are actually about: not just fixing what feels “off,” but cultivating deeper safety, softness, and sensitivity in your body, alongside other women in a community.
